Portfolio: Clean Energy Certification

The Clean Energy Certification project from Washington’s Department of Labor and Industries provides tax refunds and deferrals for projects developing in the clean energy sector.

The program was created as a way for the state to address the impacts of climate change and support innovation on a large scale.

Prototyping the Workflow

I was contracted to create a prototype demonstrating how users would submit and manage their project certifications. I designed the project’s interface within Labor & Industries’s theme and provided additional UI patterns.

The prototype consisted of an application for certification, a dashboard where users could manage their projects and track their progress through the pipeline, and a file attachment workflow. Once an approved project is completed, the user follows an additional process to notify the department and receive their benefits.

Stakeholders were happy enough with the results that the client later invited me back to add new features for the first big update.

After making improvements based on usability study results, the project was handed off to developers for implementation.

Stakeholders were happy enough with the results that the client later invited me back for a version 2 expansion of the program. I helped them envision an additional workflow through which users can apply for and manage tax deferrals on their energy projects.
